Training & Fitness - Plan & recover
Training around pain or injury
Last reviewed 3 August 2026. How we write this.
Training around an injury means modifying load while obtaining an appropriate diagnosis - not using exercise advice to guess what the injury is.
Pain is influenced by tissue, sensitivity, context and previous experience. A generic online rule cannot identify the cause.
Useful principles
- Remove or modify the movement that clearly aggravates symptoms.
- Keep pain-free activity and unaffected areas active when appropriate.
- Rebuild capacity gradually rather than jumping from rest to the old workload.
- Seek assessment for trauma, swelling, loss of function, night pain, neurological symptoms or failure to improve.
General education only. Training needs to be adapted to the individual. Stop and seek appropriate clinical help for chest pain, fainting, severe breathlessness, neurological symptoms or significant/worsening pain.
