Low-back pain: what helps and what needs care
Last reviewed 3 August 2026. How we write this.
Most low-back pain is not explained by one damaged structure, and staying appropriately active is commonly part of recovery.
Pain intensity does not map perfectly to tissue damage. Sleep, fear, workload and previous episodes can influence symptoms.
What usually helps
- Gradual return to normal activity.
- Exercise the person can tolerate and progress.
- Temporary modification rather than prolonged bed rest.
- Assessment when symptoms are severe, persistent or unusual.
New bladder or bowel disturbance, saddle numbness, progressive weakness, fever or major trauma needs urgent assessment.
