Training & Fitness - Plan & recover
How to build a weekly training programme
Last reviewed 3 August 2026. How we write this.
A useful programme fits the person’s goal, schedule, experience and ability to recover.
The best theoretical programme is useless if it cannot be followed. Begin with the number of days that can be repeated most weeks, then distribute the main movement patterns and goals across them.
What to write down
- Exercise, sets, repetitions and load.
- How hard the set felt and whether technique changed.
- Pain or unusual symptoms.
- Sleep, stress and major changes that explain performance.
Hold the plan steady long enough to learn from it. Change an exercise for a reason - pain, poor fit, unavailable equipment or a new goal - not because novelty feels productive.
