Training & Fitness - Plan & recover
Recovery, fatigue and when to deload
Last reviewed 3 August 2026. How we write this.
Recovery is where adaptation becomes possible; a deload is one tool for managing accumulated fatigue.
Normal training fatigue should settle. A persistent fall in performance, motivation, sleep quality or tolerance for usual work can mean the total stress is outrunning recovery.
Recovery priorities
- Enough sleep and food for the goal.
- A sensible increase in weekly work.
- Easier days between demanding sessions.
- A planned reduction in load or volume when fatigue accumulates.
Sharp pain, chest symptoms, fainting, neurological symptoms or an injury that is worsening are not a signal to “push through”.
