About this classroom
Peptides are short chains of amino acids - the same building blocks that make up proteins, only much smaller. In the body, many act as signalling molecules: chemical messages that tell cells what to do. This classroom treats peptides as a subject to understand rather than a product to buy. You will learn what they are, how researchers study them, and how to tell a solid claim from a shaky one.
Where the evidence stands: The evidence base varies enormously from one peptide to the next - a few are well studied in humans, many only in cells or animals. We say which is which rather than lumping them together.

- Are peptides the same as steroids?
- No. They are a different class of molecule with different mechanisms. Some peptides influence hormonal pathways, but "peptide" is not a synonym for "anabolic steroid".
