What are peptides? A beginner’s primer
The plain-English starting point: what a peptide is, how it differs from a protein, and why these molecules matter in the body.
Peptides are short chains of amino acids. Amino acids are the small building blocks that link together to form the proteins your body runs on; when a chain is short - very roughly, fewer than about fifty amino acids - we call it a peptide rather than a protein. That size difference is not just a label. It changes how the molecule folds, how stable it is, and how it behaves in the body.
Your body makes and uses thousands of peptides of its own. Many act as signalling molecules: short messages that travel to a cell, fit into a matching receptor like a key into a lock, and tell that cell to do something - release a hormone, begin a repair process, dial a function up or down. Insulin, which manages blood sugar, is a peptide. So are many of the messengers behind appetite, growth and inflammation.
Peptides, proteins and amino acids
It helps to picture a spectrum of size. A single amino acid is one bead. A peptide is a short string of beads. A protein is a long string, usually folded into an elaborate three-dimensional shape. The longer and more folded the molecule, the more complex its job tends to be, and the harder it is to make and to keep stable outside the body.
Why peptides get so much attention
Because peptides are the body's own signalling language, researchers are interested in whether specific peptides can be used to nudge specific processes - tissue repair, metabolism, sleep, and so on. That is a genuinely active area of science. It is also an area where marketing runs a long way ahead of the evidence, which is exactly why the rest of this classroom spends as much time on how to read the research as on the compounds themselves.
