Storage, light and stability
What actually degrades a peptide - heat, light, time and repeated temperature swings - and the science of keeping one intact.
A peptide is only as good as its condition, and condition is mostly about storage. The same fragility that makes these molecules interesting also makes them easy to ruin.
The four enemies
- Heat: speeds up the chemical reactions that break the molecule down.
- Light: particularly UV, can damage sensitive structures.
- Time: even under good conditions, degradation is gradual and continuous.
- Freeze-thaw cycles: repeatedly freezing and thawing a solution stresses the molecule more than steady storage.
This is why the dry, frozen powder is the stable form and a reconstituted solution is the perishable one - and why researchers care about how long a solution has been sitting, and at what temperature.
Why it matters to you as a reader
Storage is one of the hidden reasons research results vary. A compound that was pure when it was made can still be degraded by the time it reaches the bench, and no certificate of analysis can tell you how something was handled after it left the lab. Understanding stability is part of understanding why "purity" is necessary but not sufficient.
