Mobility, Posture & Pain - Pain science
Modern pain science in plain English
Last reviewed 3 August 2026. How we write this.
Pain is a protective experience influenced by tissue signals, the nervous system and context; this does not make it unreal.
Acute pain often protects an injury. Persistent pain can continue after tissue healing and become less proportional to current damage.
A broader plan can include
- Education without dismissal.
- Graded movement and meaningful activity.
- Sleep and psychological support.
- Medical treatment when indicated.
Pain science should expand treatment options, not be used to tell someone the pain is only in their head.
