Creatine monohydrate: benefits, limits and safety
Last reviewed 3 August 2026. How we write this.
Creatine monohydrate is one of the best-studied performance supplements, especially for repeated high-intensity work and resistance training.
Creatine helps replenish phosphocreatine, which supports rapid energy turnover during short, demanding efforts. Its evidence base is much stronger than most products sold for muscle or performance.
What to know
- Creatine monohydrate is the reference form used in most research.
- An increase in body mass can occur partly from water held within muscle.
- Responses vary and it does not replace training.
- Kidney disease or relevant medication warrants clinical advice before use.
