Vitamin D: deficiency, testing and excess
Last reviewed 3 August 2026. How we write this.
Vitamin D supports bone and muscle biology, but the value of supplementation depends strongly on baseline status and context.
The body makes vitamin D in response to sunlight and obtains some from food. Low status is more likely with limited sun exposure, darker skin at higher latitudes, covering most skin and certain health conditions.
Why more is not always better
Correcting deficiency and taking large doses without an indication are different decisions. Excess vitamin D can raise calcium and cause harm, so megadoses are not a harmless shortcut.
