Caffeine: performance, timing and sleep
Last reviewed 3 August 2026. How we write this.
Caffeine can improve alertness and some exercise performance, but dose, timing and individual sensitivity determine the trade-off.
Caffeine blocks adenosine signalling, reducing the feeling of sleep pressure for a time. It does not remove the biological need for sleep.
The hidden cost
A dose that helps a morning session can still disrupt sleep later, especially in a sensitive person. Tolerance can also reduce the noticeable effect while withdrawal creates headaches and fatigue.
- Count coffee, energy drinks and pre-workout together.
- Avoid assuming a larger dose works better.
- Pregnancy, heart rhythm concerns, anxiety and medication can change the risk.
