Protein powder: useful tool or expensive food?
Last reviewed 3 August 2026. How we write this.
Protein powder is a convenient food supplement, not a special muscle-building category.
Muscle responds to total resistance training and adequate protein across the day. Powder can help someone reach that intake when ordinary meals are inconvenient, but it is not required.
Choosing one
- Check protein per serving rather than the size of the scoop.
- Choose a source that fits allergies, diet and digestion.
- Third-party sport testing matters for tested athletes.
- A long ingredient list does not mean a better product.
