How to read a pre-workout label
Last reviewed 3 August 2026. How we write this.
Pre-workout is a product category, not one ingredient; its effects and risks depend on the label.
Many products combine caffeine with amino acids, flavourings and proprietary blends. Feeling a product strongly does not prove that it improves training adaptation.
Read it ingredient by ingredient
- Total caffeine from every source.
- Amounts disclosed rather than hidden in a blend.
- Whether each ingredient has evidence at the listed amount.
- Independent contaminant testing, especially for athletes.
