Brain & Mental Wellbeing - Focus & cognition
Focus, attention and distraction
Last reviewed 3 August 2026. How we write this.
Attention is influenced by sleep, environment, stress, interest and health; difficulty focusing is not automatically ADHD.
Notifications and task switching impose a real cognitive cost. Structured work periods and environmental changes can improve focus without a supplement.
Start with the obvious constraints
- Sleep opportunity and timing.
- Single-tasking and fewer interruptions.
- Clear next actions and realistic work blocks.
- Assessment when difficulties are lifelong or significantly impairing.
Stimulants and nootropics carry risks and should not be used to self-diagnose.
