About this classroom
Red light therapy - more precisely, photobiomodulation - is the use of specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to influence how cells produce energy. The leading explanation is that light in these bands is absorbed by an enzyme in the mitochondria, nudging cellular energy production. This classroom separates the parts of that story with good evidence from the parts still being worked out.
Where the evidence stands: Some applications (certain skin and pain outcomes) have reasonable human-trial support; many popular claims are still preliminary. Dose appears to matter a great deal, and more is not automatically better.

- Is it the same as a tanning bed or a heat lamp?
- No. It uses specific red and near-infrared wavelengths at low power, and does not rely on UV or on heating the tissue.
- Is it safe for the eyes?
- Bright light sources warrant caution, and eye protection is commonly advised. Follow the manufacturer guidance and speak to a professional if you are unsure.
- Will it work for everything it is marketed for?
- Unlikely. The evidence is stronger for a few uses and thin for many others - telling them apart is the point of this classroom.
