Photobiomodulation: how light reaches the mitochondria
The core mechanism story: how red and near-infrared light is thought to reach the mitochondria and nudge cellular energy production.
Red light therapy has a more precise scientific name: photobiomodulation. It describes the use of specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to influence how cells behave, rather than the heat or brightness we usually associate with light.
The leading mechanism
The most studied explanation involves an enzyme in the mitochondria called cytochrome c oxidase. This enzyme sits on the pathway cells use to make energy. Researchers propose that it absorbs light in the red and near-infrared bands, and that this absorption can transiently change how efficiently the mitochondria produce energy. It is a plausible, well-described mechanism - but a mechanism is a hypothesis about how something might work, not proof that a given outcome follows.
Why light penetration matters
For light to affect a cell, it has to reach it. Longer wavelengths generally travel deeper into tissue than shorter ones, which is part of why near-infrared is studied for deeper targets and red for more superficial ones. A lot of light is scattered or absorbed before it gets anywhere, which is one reason dose and delivery are such recurring themes in this field.

- Findings in isolated cells or animals do not automatically carry over to humans.
- The same wavelength can behave very differently depending on how much energy reaches the target.
