What the evidence actually supports
A calm map of where the human evidence is reasonable, where it is thin, and how to tell honest claims from hopeful ones.
Photobiomodulation is an unusual field: the underlying mechanism is fairly well described, yet the strength of evidence varies enormously depending on which outcome you look at. Reading it well means grading each claim on its own, not accepting or dismissing the whole field at once.
Where human trials are relatively stronger
Some skin-related and pain-related outcomes have been studied in controlled human trials, and certain of these have reasonable support. Even here, the results are best described as areas of active, encouraging research rather than settled fact, and study quality and dose vary widely between trials.
Where claims run ahead of the evidence
Many of the most heavily marketed uses - broad claims about energy, longevity, fat loss, cognitive performance and general wellness - remain preliminary or largely unproven in humans. There may be interesting early or mechanistic signals, but early signals and confirmed human benefits are not the same thing.
Questions to ask of any claim
- Is the evidence from human trials, or from cells and animals only?
- Was there a proper comparison group, or just before-and-after impressions?
- Does the claim describe a studied outcome, or promise a guaranteed result?
- Are the wavelength and dose reported, or vaguely described?
