Balance and preventing falls
Last reviewed 3 August 2026. How we write this.
Falls are not an inevitable part of ageing and risk is often modifiable.
Strength, balance, vision, medication, blood pressure, footwear and the home environment can all contribute.
A layered prevention approach
- Practise challenging balance safely.
- Strengthen legs and rehearse floor transfers where appropriate.
- Review medicines and vision.
- Remove avoidable trip hazards and improve lighting.
A fall, new unsteadiness or dizziness may signal an underlying problem and should not be treated as a fitness issue alone.
