Healthy Ageing & Longevity - Healthspan
What longevity and healthspan really mean
Last reviewed 3 August 2026. How we write this.
Longevity should mean extending healthy, independent life rather than chasing one biomarker or speculative intervention.
Lifespan is years lived; healthspan is years lived with function and quality of life. Genetics matter, but cardiovascular risk, activity, smoking, vaccination and social conditions are major practical levers.
Use outcomes that matter
- Physical function and independence.
- Cognition and sensory health.
- Disease burden and medication safety.
- Connection, purpose and quality of life.
A mechanism associated with ageing is not automatically a treatment target proven to extend human life.
