Hormones & HRT - Menopause
Perimenopause and menopause, explained
Last reviewed 3 August 2026. How we write this.
Perimenopause is the transition before periods stop; symptoms and bleeding patterns vary and other causes may need exclusion.
Hot flushes, sleep disruption, cycle change, vaginal symptoms and mood changes can occur. Age, symptoms and history often matter more than a single hormone result.
When bleeding needs assessment
Very heavy bleeding, bleeding after sex or any bleeding after menopause should be discussed promptly with a clinician.
