Deliberate cold exposure - cold showers, ice baths, cold-water swimming - triggers a strong, well-characterised stress response: a jump in certain hormones, changes in blood flow, and activation of the body cold-adaptation systems. This classroom looks at what that response actually does, what it plausibly helps with, and how to approach it without taking unnecessary risks.
Where the evidence stands: Cold exposure reliably produces short-term physiological effects; the longer-term benefits are more mixed and depend heavily on which outcome you are asking about.

- It activates energy-using processes in the short term. Whether that adds up to meaningful fat loss in practice is far less clear.
- Is an ice bath dangerous?
- It can be, particularly for people with heart or blood-pressure conditions. Cold shock is a real risk - never do it alone in open water.
- Should I cold plunge after training?
- The timing is genuinely debated - cold immediately after strength training may blunt some adaptations. The classroom covers the trade-off.
