Cold-water swimming and open-water risk

Open-water cold swimming adds drowning, current and afterdrop risks beyond those of a controlled shower or bath.
Cold shock can cause involuntary gasping and rapid breathing immediately. Swimming ability does not prevent this response.
- Never enter alone.
- Use a known supervised location.
- Enter gradually and keep an exit available.
- Warm and dress after leaving; continued cooling can occur.
