What cold exposure does to your body
A tour of the immediate, well-characterised changes cold exposure sets off - in blood flow, breathing and metabolism - before we ask what any of it means for health.
When cold water or cold air hits the skin, the body reacts within seconds. Temperature sensors in the skin fire, blood vessels near the surface narrow, and the nervous system shifts into a heightened state. These are reflexes, not choices, and they are some of the most reliably reproduced effects in the whole of cold research. Understanding them is the foundation for everything else this classroom covers.
The first responses
The most immediate change is vasoconstriction: surface blood vessels tighten, pushing blood away from the skin and towards the core. This is why skin pales and fingers feel numb. At the same time, breathing rate and heart rate typically rise sharply, and blood pressure tends to climb. In cold water this early phase includes a gasp reflex, which matters a great deal for safety and is covered in its own lesson.
What the body does to stay warm
- Shivering - rapid, involuntary muscle contractions that generate heat, usually starting once core temperature begins to drop.
- Non-shivering thermogenesis - heat produced chemically, largely through a specialised tissue called brown fat, discussed in the next lesson.
- Redistributed blood flow - keeping the core and vital organs warm at the expense of the extremities.
Short-term versus lasting change
It is worth separating two very different questions. One is what happens during and just after a cold exposure, which is dramatic and easy to measure. The other is whether repeated exposure produces durable adaptation. The immediate physiology is solid ground; the longer-term picture is where the evidence becomes far more mixed, and where much of the marketing runs ahead of what has actually been shown in humans.
