Ask how cold a plunge should be or how long it should last, and the honest answer is that studies use a wide range of values and rarely agree on an optimum. So instead of offering a routine, this lesson does something more useful: it explains the variables researchers describe, and why each one changes how a study should be interpreted. Think of it as learning to read the methods section, not follow a recipe.
The variables researchers describe
Temperature - studies span from merely cool to near-freezing water, and effects at one temperature cannot be assumed at another. Duration - exposures in the literature range from under a minute to many minutes, and longer is not automatically more beneficial. Frequency - some protocols are one-off, others repeated over weeks; adaptation questions need the repeated designs. Immersion depth - whether only the limbs, the torso, or up to the neck is submerged changes the physiological load considerably. Water versus air - moving water and full immersion pull heat far faster than cold air at the same temperature.
Why the variables matter
These parameters are not interchangeable. A study showing an effect after brief immersion in very cold water tells you little about prolonged exposure to mildly cool water, and vice versa. When a claim is made about cold exposure, the first questions to ask are how cold, how long, how often, and how much of the body - because change any of those and the physiology, and the risk, change with it.
Reading protocols honestly
A described protocol in a paper is a record of what that study did with those participants under supervision - not an endorsement that the same values are safe or effective for anyone else. Colder and longer also means more physiological stress and more risk, which is exactly why the next lesson treats safety as its own serious topic.
