Heart & Metabolic Health - Know your numbers
Cholesterol, ApoB and cardiovascular risk
Last reviewed 3 August 2026. How we write this.
Cholesterol results make sense only inside overall cardiovascular risk, not as isolated good and bad numbers.
LDL-containing particles contribute to atherosclerosis, while age, smoking, blood pressure, diabetes, kidney disease and family history change absolute risk.
Read the panel in context
- LDL and non-HDL cholesterol describe atherogenic cholesterol burden.
- Triglycerides are influenced by meals, alcohol, metabolism and genetics.
- HDL is associated with risk but simply raising it does not guarantee protection.
- ApoB and lipoprotein(a) can answer selected additional questions.
Risk calculators and clinical history help determine whether lifestyle alone or medication should be discussed.
