Insulin resistance and blood sugar
Last reviewed 3 August 2026. How we write this.
Insulin resistance is reduced responsiveness to insulin and cannot be diagnosed reliably from symptoms or a wearable glucose curve alone.
The pancreas may initially make more insulin to keep glucose controlled. Over time, glucose can rise and the risk of type 2 diabetes increases.
What changes risk
- Body-fat distribution and genetics.
- Physical activity and muscle mass.
- Sleep, medication and some endocrine conditions.
- Dietary pattern and total energy balance.
HbA1c, fasting glucose and other clinical tests answer different questions and should be interpreted in context.
