How to understand blood pressure
Last reviewed 3 August 2026. How we write this.
Blood pressure is a major, modifiable cardiovascular risk factor and one reading is not enough to diagnose hypertension.
Blood pressure varies with posture, stress, caffeine, exercise and measurement technique. Repeated home readings or ambulatory monitoring can show the usual pattern better than a single clinic value.
Getting a useful measurement
- Use a validated upper-arm cuff of the correct size.
- Sit quietly with feet supported and arm at heart level.
- Avoid talking and repeat readings as instructed.
- Discuss persistently high, very low or symptomatic readings with a clinician.
Lifestyle, medication and underlying conditions can all matter. Severe readings with chest pain, neurological symptoms or breathlessness need urgent care.
