Omega-3 and fish oil: what the evidence means
Last reviewed 3 August 2026. How we write this.
Omega-3 fats are nutrients with established biology, while the benefit of a capsule varies by diet, dose and clinical context.
EPA and DHA come mainly from fish and algae. Supplements can lower triglycerides at clinically used doses, but that specific effect should not be stretched into a promise that any fish-oil capsule prevents every cardiovascular outcome.
What changes the decision
- How much oily fish or other omega-3 food is already eaten.
- The actual EPA and DHA per serving.
- Oxidation, storage and product testing.
- Bleeding risk, medication and planned surgery.
