VO₂max intervals, explained
Last reviewed 3 August 2026. How we write this.
VO₂max intervals use hard repeated efforts to challenge oxygen delivery and use; they are effective but demanding.
Intervals typically last long enough for breathing and oxygen use to rise substantially, separated by recovery that allows another quality effort.
They are not a beginner requirement
Someone can improve fitness considerably through regular moderate exercise. Hard intervals become useful when the person has a base, understands pacing and can recover.
- Warm up progressively.
- Choose a safe mode and repeatable duration.
- Stop when quality drops sharply.
- Do not turn every cardio session into intervals.
General education only. Training needs to be adapted to the individual. Stop and seek appropriate clinical help for chest pain, fainting, severe breathlessness, neurological symptoms or significant/worsening pain.
