Training & Fitness - Cardio & HIIT
How to combine strength and cardio
Last reviewed 3 August 2026. How we write this.
Strength and endurance can be trained together; the best arrangement depends on which quality has priority and how trained the person is.
For general health, doing both matters far more than optimising their order. For an advanced athlete seeking maximal lower-body strength or endurance, competing fatigue becomes more relevant.
Practical scheduling
- Put the priority session when freshest.
- Separate demanding lower-body lifting and hard endurance work when possible.
- Easy cardio usually creates less conflict than hard intervals.
- Reduce total work before blaming the combination itself.
General education only. Training needs to be adapted to the individual. Stop and seek appropriate clinical help for chest pain, fainting, severe breathlessness, neurological symptoms or significant/worsening pain.
