Training & Fitness - Get stronger
Strength vs hypertrophy: what changes?
Last reviewed 3 August 2026. How we write this.
Strength and muscle growth support each other, but they are not identical outcomes and should not be trained as though they are.
Strength includes muscle size, skill, coordination and familiarity with a specific movement. Hypertrophy means increasing muscle size.
Where programmes differ
- Strength prioritises the lifts or movement patterns being tested and commonly uses heavier loads.
- Hypertrophy prioritises enough challenging weekly work across the target muscle.
- A person can become stronger through better skill before visible muscle gain.
- A muscle can grow without maximising performance in one specific lift.
