How to train for general health and fitness
Last reviewed 3 August 2026. How we write this.
General health training combines aerobic activity, strength, balance where relevant and less sedentary time.
A person does not need to train like a bodybuilder or endurance athlete to gain meaningful health benefits. WHO guidance for adults combines 150–300 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75–150 minutes vigorous activity with strengthening on at least two days.
A simple week
- Two whole-body strength sessions.
- Several moderate aerobic sessions or brisk walks.
- Small amounts of harder work if appropriate and enjoyable.
- Regular movement breaks during sedentary days.
- Balance work for older adults or anyone at increased fall risk.
General education only. Training needs to be adapted to the individual. Stop and seek appropriate clinical help for chest pain, fainting, severe breathlessness, neurological symptoms or significant/worsening pain.
