Heart & Metabolic Health - Fitness & movement
Steps, walking and sedentary time
Last reviewed 3 August 2026. How we write this.
Daily movement and less sedentary time matter even when someone also completes formal workouts.
Exercise does not make every other hour irrelevant. Walking, stairs, active transport and movement breaks increase total activity with relatively little recovery cost.
Make movement easier to repeat
- Track trends rather than worshipping one step target.
- Break long sitting periods with short movement.
- Increase from the current baseline.
- Use walking after meals if practical and safe.
There is no universal magic step count; meaningful benefit begins below common marketing targets.
