Training & Fitness - Build muscle
How much training volume builds muscle?
Last reviewed 3 August 2026. How we write this.
Training volume describes how much useful work is performed, and more eventually produces diminishing returns rather than unlimited progress.
Volume is often counted as hard sets per muscle per week. It can also mean repetitions or load moved, so always check which definition is being used.
Find a recoverable amount
- Start with fewer repeatable sets.
- Add work only when progress has slowed and recovery is good.
- Count direct work more heavily than exercises where a muscle only assists.
- Reduce volume when performance and recovery deteriorate together.
The best volume is not the most you can survive once; it is an amount that creates progress and can be repeated.
