Tempo and threshold training
Last reviewed 3 August 2026. How we write this.
Tempo and threshold sessions train sustained faster running, but the terms are used inconsistently and the session should be defined by its purpose.
Threshold work sits around the hardest intensity that can be sustained in a controlled, steady way for a meaningful period. It is not an all-out time trial.
Common formats
- A continuous controlled effort.
- Longer repetitions separated by short easy recoveries.
- Race-specific blocks used later in a plan.
One purposeful session can be enough for a newer runner. Adding intensity before consistent easy running usually reverses the correct order.
General education only. Training needs to be adapted to the individual. Stop and seek appropriate clinical help for chest pain, fainting, severe breathlessness, neurological symptoms or significant/worsening pain.
