Strength training for complete beginners
Last reviewed 3 August 2026. How we write this.
Strength is specific: getting stronger means practising force production in the movements and ranges you want to improve.
Strength training uses resistance that muscles work against. A beginner can improve with machines, free weights, bands or bodyweight work if the movements can be progressed.
Start with movement patterns
- A squat or leg-press pattern.
- A hip-hinge pattern.
- A horizontal and vertical push.
- A horizontal and vertical pull.
- Loaded carries, trunk control or both.
Technique does not need to look identical for every body. It should be controlled, repeatable and appropriate to the person’s joints and experience.
