Effort, failure and reps in reserve
Last reviewed 3 August 2026. How we write this.
Repetitions in reserve estimate how many good repetitions were left at the end of a set and help describe effort without testing failure every time.
A set ending at roughly two repetitions in reserve means you believe two more controlled repetitions were possible. It is an estimate and improves with experience.
Do you need to train to failure?
No. Muscle work generally needs to be challenging, but failure adds fatigue and is harder to judge safely on complex lifts. Leaving a small reserve is a practical default for most work.
- Use technique breakdown as a stopping signal.
- Isolation and machine exercises are usually easier to take closer to failure.
- Keep more reserve when learning a movement or managing fatigue.
General education only. Training needs to be adapted to the individual. Stop and seek appropriate clinical help for chest pain, fainting, severe breathlessness, neurological symptoms or significant/worsening pain.
