Training & Fitness - Training styles
CrossFit and functional fitness
Last reviewed 3 August 2026. How we write this.
Functional fitness and CrossFit-style training combine strength, skills and conditioning, but the label alone does not guarantee suitability.
Varied mixed-modal sessions can be engaging and improve broad fitness. Complex lifts performed under fatigue require appropriate skill and scaling.
Function is goal-specific
- Choose movements relevant to the desired capacity.
- Scale load, range and pace.
- Learn technical lifts outside fatigue first.
- Track progression instead of relying only on workout novelty.
General training education only. Complex skills and heavy lifting benefit from qualified coaching, suitable equipment and progression matched to the individual.
