Calisthenics and bodyweight progression
Last reviewed 3 August 2026. How we write this.
Calisthenics develops strength and skill using bodyweight leverage, range and increasingly difficult variations.
Push-ups, rows, pull-ups, dips, squats and trunk work form a base. Progress can come from repetitions, range, tempo, leverage, external load or a harder variation.
Skill and strength are separate constraints
- Practise the specific skill while fresh.
- Build muscle and strength with scalable basics.
- Do not rush connective-tissue loading.
- Use assistance to earn clean repetitions.
General training education only. Complex skills and heavy lifting benefit from qualified coaching, suitable equipment and progression matched to the individual.
