The real risks of hyperbaric environments
Hyperbaric environments carry real physical risks, which is why the therapy is normally supervised rather than treated as a casual activity.
It is easy for wellness marketing to make HBOT sound gentle, but a hyperbaric environment is a genuine medical setting with real risks. These are not reasons for alarm so much as reasons the therapy is handled by trained staff who screen people and manage the exposure carefully. Understanding the hazards is part of reading the topic honestly.
Pressure-related effects
Changing pressure affects the body's air-filled spaces, such as the ears and sinuses. Barotrauma refers to injury from this pressure difference and is one of the more commonly discussed concerns. It is a large part of why screening, gradual pressure changes and supervision exist around the therapy.
Oxygen at high levels
Oxygen itself, at high pressure and concentration, is not automatically harmless. Oxygen toxicity is a recognised risk that clinical protocols are specifically designed to keep within safe limits. This is another reason the therapy is not something to improvise - the same feature that makes it interesting, high available oxygen, is also the source of a hazard.
