Pressure changes can injure ears, sinuses and lungs; oxygen also has dose-dependent toxicity.
Middle-ear barotrauma is a common adverse effect. Untreated pneumothorax is a major contraindication. Fire control is fundamental in an oxygen-rich clinical environment.
Screening is not optional
Respiratory disease, ear problems, fever, medications and implanted equipment can affect suitability and belong in a clinical assessment.
