Understanding anxiety

Anxiety becomes a clinical concern when fear, worry or avoidance is persistent, disproportionate and disruptive.
Physical sensations such as a racing heart can intensify threat interpretation, while avoidance provides short relief but can maintain the cycle.
Evidence-based help exists
- Cognitive behavioural approaches.
- Graded exposure when appropriate.
- Medication for selected people.
- Sleep, substances and medical causes considered in assessment.
A crisis, risk of harm or inability to stay safe needs urgent local support.
