Supplements - Safety
Supplement safety and medication interactions
Last reviewed 3 August 2026. How we write this.
Supplements can interact with medicines, tests, surgery and each other, even when they are sold as natural.
A supplement can alter clotting, blood pressure, sedation, liver enzymes or the absorption of a medicine. Risk rises when several products contain overlapping ingredients.
A safer checklist
- Keep a list of every product and dose.
- Check it with a pharmacist or clinician when medicines are involved.
- Stop assuming “natural” means inactive.
- Use independent quality testing where available.
- Report suspected adverse effects through the relevant regulator.
