Electrolytes: when water is enough
Last reviewed 3 August 2026. How we write this.
Electrolyte needs depend on sweat loss, heat, exercise duration, diet and fluid intake.
Plain water is adequate for many ordinary sessions. Longer hot exercise or heavy salty sweating can increase sodium needs.
More can also be harmful
Excess plain water can dilute blood sodium, while unnecessary high-sodium products may be unsuitable for some conditions.
