Light, darkness and the timing of everything
Why light is the master signal for the body clock, how darkness matters, and what the timing of exposure does to your rhythm.
Of all the signals that set the circadian clock, light is the strongest. Specialised cells in the retina detect light - particularly brighter, bluer daytime light - and send timing information straight to the master clock. This pathway is well characterised, and the effect of light on circadian timing is one of the more robust findings in the field.
Timing changes the effect
The same light can push your rhythm in opposite directions depending on when it lands. Light in the morning tends to shift the clock earlier, while light late in the evening tends to shift it later. This is why the timing of exposure, not just the amount, is what the evidence emphasises.
- Morning daylight is associated with an earlier, more stable rhythm and easier waking.
- Bright light in the late evening can delay the rhythm and is associated with a later melatonin rise.
- Indoor lighting is far dimmer than daylight, so outdoor morning light generally provides a much stronger timing signal than being indoors.
The role of darkness
Darkness is not simply the absence of light - it is an active part of the signal. The evening rise in melatonin depends on the body perceiving a genuine biological night, and evening light exposure can blunt or delay that rise. Research on this is reasonably consistent, though the size of the effect varies between individuals and with the brightness and colour of the light.
A useful way to hold all this: the clock reads the contrast between bright days and dark nights. When that contrast is strong and consistent, the rhythm tends to be well aligned. When days are dim and nights are bright, the signal weakens and the rhythm can drift. This principle is well supported, even though the precise thresholds differ from person to person.
