Your circadian clock, explained
What the circadian clock is, where it sits in the body, and why its timing shapes sleep, alertness and recovery.
Your circadian clock is an internal timekeeper that runs on a roughly 24-hour cycle. The master clock sits in a small cluster of cells in the brain called the suprachiasmatic nucleus, and it coordinates a network of secondary clocks found in almost every tissue. This system is one of the most thoroughly studied in human biology, and the core mechanism is strongly supported by decades of research across animals and people.
What the clock actually does
The clock does not just tell you when to feel sleepy. It sets the daily rhythm of core body temperature, hormone release, digestion and alertness. Because these rhythms are anticipatory, the body starts preparing for sleep or waking before the event happens, rather than simply reacting to it.
- Melatonin, a hormone associated with the biological night, typically begins rising a couple of hours before habitual sleep.
- Core body temperature falls across the night and reaches its low point in the early morning.
- Alertness follows a daily curve, with a common dip in the early afternoon that is a normal feature of the rhythm, not necessarily a sign of poor sleep.
Free-running and entrainment
Left with no time cues, the human clock tends to run slightly longer than 24 hours, which is why it needs daily resetting to stay aligned with the outside world. This resetting is called entrainment, and light is the dominant signal that does it. The research consensus here is firm - light exposure, timing and consistency are the levers with the strongest evidence, a theme this classroom returns to throughout.
Understanding the clock as a timing system, rather than an on-off switch, explains why when you sleep can matter as much as how long. A rhythm that drifts out of alignment with your schedule can leave you tired at the wrong times even when total sleep looks adequate.
