Gut Health & Microbiome - IBS & symptoms
The low-FODMAP diet, properly used
Last reviewed 3 August 2026. How we write this.
A low-FODMAP diet is a short structured intervention for selected IBS symptoms, not a lifelong template for gut health.
It reduces fermentable carbohydrates, then reintroduces groups to identify tolerance.
The three phases matter
- Restriction for a limited period.
- Systematic reintroduction.
- Personalisation with the broadest tolerated diet.
- Dietitian support where possible.
Long-term unnecessary restriction can reduce diet quality and social flexibility.
