Gut Health & Microbiome - Microbiome basics
The gut microbiome, explained
Last reviewed 3 August 2026. How we write this.
The gut microbiome is an ecosystem of microorganisms and genes, not one score that can be universally labelled good or bad.
Microbes help process food and interact with immune and metabolic systems. Composition varies with diet, medication, environment, age and geography.
Interpret carefully
- Association does not prove a microbe caused a condition.
- Stool captures only part of the gut ecosystem.
- Diversity is not always equivalent to health.
- Animal findings need human confirmation.
Microbiome science is important and rapidly developing, but clinical applications remain narrower than consumer marketing.
